Our work

Ensuring the world’s food security
CIMMYT works to develop more productive and sustainable agrifood systems in low- and middle-income countries. The centerās research portfolio targets critical challenges, including food insecurity and malnutrition, climate change, and environmental degradation.
By working in multidisciplinary large-scale projects and with partner organizations, CIMMYT comprehends challenges better and is able to develop solutions to strengthen food production and sustainable agriculture.
OUR MISSION
Science and innovation for a food and nutrition secure world
OUR VISION
CIMMYT contributes to the development of a world with healthier and more
prosperous people – free from the threat of global food crises – and with more
resilient agri-food systems.
Our Research Programs
CIMMYT provides a pathway for a holistic transformation of agrifood systems, improving access to agricultural innovation and nutrient-rich diets through diverse crops and cropping systems development.

Turning agricultural research into impact
Currently CIMMYT is working to:
- Render agrifood systems more inclusive, efficient, productive, sustainable, and climate resilient.
- Ensure food and nutrition security in the Global South within planetary boundaries and improve the livelihood of smallholder farmers.
- Maintain and improve partnerships to take informed, coordinated, and consolidated measures to overcome agrifood system disruptions, the impacts of climate change, and structural, global inequalities to food and agricultural innovation.
- Secure that the biodiversity of main staple crops is used more widely and equitably.
- Provide technologies and know-how to farmers and local entrepreneurs and help them to become the engines of economic growth.
- Develop the capacity of individuals and institutions in partnership with world-class universities, national agricultural research and extension systems, the private sector, and researchers from other organizations.
Collaborate to succeed
Through collaborative research, partnerships, and training, CIMMYT helps to build and strengthen a new generation of national agricultural research and extension services.
CIMMYT is a member of CGIAR, composed of 15 agricultural research centers working together to sustainably intensify global agriculture. CIMMYT led the CGIAR Research Programs on Maize and Wheat, and the Excellence in Breeding Platform, which aligned and added value to the efforts of more than 500 partners.
