Exploration of options for functional seed systems and understanding of market needs for cereals and pulses in sub-Saharan Africa

The Seed Systems and Market Intelligence Team of the Sustainable Agrifood Systems (SAS) Program convened for a three-day retreat in Kenya. The retreat provided an opportunity to review ongoing research on seed systems and market intelligence conducted across CIMMYT projcts and CGIAR initiatives.

The event featured oral and poster presentations highlighting key findings from current research activities, fostering constructive feedback from colleagues. Discussion focused on strengthening the team’s technical capacity and ensuring its responsiveness to CIMMYT’s research programs and the broader CGIAR science agenda.

During the retreat, team members presented research spanning a wide range of topics. One key area focused on understanding the demands of farmers, processors, and consumers, for future crop traits, with the aim of informing breeding systems programs to maximize their impact.

The team highlight challenges faced by agro-processors, such as rancidity in pearl millet, which affects the shelf life of processed millet flour. Research also explored groundnut processing across different countries, revealing varied market demands.

In Malawi, groundnut markets prioritize grain size, color and uniformity-driven largely by export requirements-while oil content is less of a focus. In contrast, Nigerian markets demand high oil content for kuli kuli production and show a preference for early maturing varieties. Meanwhile, in Tanzania, an emerging peanut butter market has created opportunities for new groundnut varieties tailored to this product.

Seed systems research in Kenya highlighted how information and economic incentives for farmers and agro-dealers can serve as effective policy options to boost the adoption of new maize hybrids. These strategies have the potential to increase the market share of newly introduced hybrids in the maize seed sector.

The team showcased the impact of providing variety-specific, independently evaluated yield data for commercially available seed products under local conditions to guide farmers’ seed choices. Additionally, they explored the use of rebates as incentives for agro-dealers to stock new products and actively encourage farmers to try them. The role of price discounts and targeted information at the retail level for newly released varieties was also discussed as a way to promote adoption among farmers.

Another key area of research focused on how farmers perceive existing promotional materials distributed by seed companies. Feedback indicated that most leaflets and posters were not visually engaging. Farmers expressed a preference for materials that include visuals of plant stands, cob sizes, yield potential, and other critical details, presented in local languages like swahili.

Looking ahead, the team outlined a new four-year project supported by the Impact Assessment Group under the Genetic Innovations Action Area. This initiative will build on the current findings to generate further evidence on how information can accelerate farmer adoption of new seed products. It will also examine the role of agro-dealers as key information agents to disseminate knowledge effectively to farmers.

The meeting also highlighted the assessment of varietal turnover in Ethiopia and the role of the DNA Fingerprinting (DNA FP) approach in improving the accuracy of varietal identification. Accurate data generated through this method supports more robust studies on varietal adoption, turnover, and impact. It also enables the assessment of whether released varieties are being cultivated within their target agro-ecologies and contributes to understanding varietal diversity within production systems.

Discussions emphasized the relevance of the DNA FP approach for accurate data collection and its potential for broader application beyond Ethiopia, Tanzania, and Nigeria, where the IMAGE project is currently active. Expanding its use to other regions would further strengthen research efforts in seed systems and market intelligence.

Paswel Marenya, associate program director of SAS Africa, commended the team for the depth and breadth of their research and encouraged greater visibility of results within CIMMYT and beyond. As a key outcome of the meeting, the team committed to increasing its visibility in seed systems and market intelligence research while building a stronger, more qualified team to achieve this goal.

In terms of staffing, the team has a solid presence in Africa but aims to expand its reach through enhanced resource mobilization. Efforts are underway to strengthen the Seed Systems and Market Intelligence team’s presence in other regions where CIMMYT operates, including Latin America (LATAM) and South Asia.

Satyam Saxena

Satyam Saxena is an economist with research interests in the economics of sustainable agriculture. Since joining CIMMYT-India in 2022, he has primarily focused on assessing the impacts of resource use, productivity, and farmers’ livelihoods. Prior to his role at CIMMYT, Satyam was a research officer at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (2019-2022), where he contributed to the UN-SDSN FABLE Pathways project, which aims to develop sustainable food and land use systems.

Satyam holds a master’s degree in economics from the University of Petroleum and Energy Studies, Dehradun, and a bachelor’s degree in commerce from the University of Delhi. His research has been published in several peer-reviewed journals and book chapters, contributing to the academic discourse on sustainable development.

Collins Makatiani Bulinda

Bulinda is a Value Chains Specialist with 8 years of experience leading Value Chains design and analysis, Livelihood, and Social Protection Programs in rural and humanitarian settings across the country. He interacts closely with policy processes and actively engages in generating knowledge that improves the delivery of development programs in the region.

Bulinda is currently a consulting research associate at CIMMYT. He has previously worked for other organizations and projects, providing technical support in strategy and project design, implementation, monitoring and evaluations, and humanitarian programming. He has specifically worked on projects for CHASP, ACTS, ICIPE, GROOTS Kenya, AfriDev Consulting, 3R-Netherlands’s project, ILRI, and Policy and Market Options.

He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Agribusiness Management and an MSc degree in Agribusiness Management at The Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Agriculture and Agribusiness Management (CESAAM) from Egerton University.

Mukwemba Habeenzu

Mukwemba Habeenzu is an economist with over 10 years of experience in agricultural project management. He is currently the Chief of Party/Project Manager for the Mechanization and Extension Activity at CIMMYT in Zimbabwe.

In his previous and current roles, he has led initiatives that promote climate-smart agriculture, mechanization, and social inclusion through market-based approaches to improve productivity, increase incomes, and ensure sustainability for project beneficiaries.

Mukwemba has a diverse background, having worked extensively in Zambia and Zimbabwe. His experience includes working with the private and public sectors, as well as various local and international organizations, focusing on areas such as research and extension, rural development, enterprise development, academia and capacity building, social inclusion, etc.
Mukwemba believes that this comprehensive approach can contribute to sustainable development in the agricultural sector.

Alison Laing

Alison Laing is the CIMMYT lead for CSISA India, and leads bilateral and Initiative-funded projects in South and Southeast Asia. She works with farmers and researchers in South and Southeast Asia to sustainably improve cropping and farming system productivity, profitability and resilience.

Alison firmly believes in participatory, multi-disciplinary research and in combining practical field-trial based research with robust modelling to examine likely long-term outcomes of different management approaches.

Peter Setimela

Peter Setimela is CIMMYT Country Representative for Zambia and Legume Seed Systems Lead for the AID- Project.

Setimela is a seed systems scientist with over 20 years of experience in CG centers, universities, and national agricultural research institutes.

A credible and innovative scientist with strong technical, commercial, and financial acumen and extensive experience in leading multi-cultural teams to deliver ground-breaking agricultural initiatives primarily in the Eastern and Southern African regions. Demonstrates a comprehensive portfolio of skills including research and development, technology scaling, program management, advocacy, partnerships, capacity building, logistics, team leadership, operations, fundraising, and training. An adaptable and resilient leader with strong communication and influencing skills and the ability to unite diverse agendas to achieve outstanding results.

Moben Ignatius

Moben Ignatius is the Agriculture Research Associate in the SAS program at CIMMYT. His role revolves around fostering sustainable agricultural practices and innovative technologies and methods that cater to Rice-Wheat cropping systems.

His previous work role extended to forging alliances with diverse organizations and governmental bodies to advocate for the expansion of these beneficial agricultural techniques. Employing meticulous monitoring, evaluation, and data-driven surveys, ensuring the successful execution and scalability of projects.

Bhavani Pinjarla

Dr. Bhavani P is the Geospatial Analyst in the Sustainable Agrifood Systems program at CIMMYT. She obtained a Ph.D. degree from the University of Hyderabad, Hyderabad on the research topic “Spatio-temporal Assessment of Agricultural Performance and its Drought Vulnerability using Long-term Satellite and Climate Data”.

Dr. Bhavani P. provides solutions to farmers (at various scales – farmers to policy level) using remote sensing and geoprocessing. She acquired contemporary professional knowledge, climate data processing, machine learning techniques for image processing, R, and Google Earth Engine (GEE) with programming proficiency in JavaScript, and Python.

Sreejith Aravindakshan

Dr. Aravindakshan is a Scientist in CIMMYT’s Sustainable Agrifood Systems program, specializing in adoption, scaling, and innovation systems.

He contributes to the TAFSSA initiative, focusing on scaling, extension, adoption, and monitoring of agrifood systems innovations. With a Ph.D. from Wageningen University in the Netherlands and MSc degrees from the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, and TU Dresden, Germany, he brings over two decades of interdisciplinary expertise in Innovation Systems and Natural Resource Economics. Dr. Aravindakshan has collaborated with governments, NGOs, and organizations like FAO, JICA, and WWF across South Asia, the Middle East, and Europe, contributing to multi-country projects funded by the EU, USAID, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Moreover, he has published high-impact journal articles aimed at guiding policy formulation in the global south.

 

Anurag Kumar

Anurag Kumar is a senior research associate in CIMMYT under the Cereal System Initiative for South Asia (CSISA) project in India.

He is involved in Coordinating trials and demonstrations of the rice-wheat cropping system in Bihar. Other than coordinating trials and demonstrations, he is effectively strengthening partnerships with national and private partners. The extension of proven technologies is the core of the project so synergizing the effort of each partner for better spread.

Deepak Kumar Singh

Deepak is a consultant in the Sustainable Agrifood Systems program at CIMMYT. His area of expertise encompasses conservation agriculture, mechanization, precision agriculture, resource management and systems research.

Arnab Chakraborty

Arnab is a Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning analyst in the Sustainable Agrifood Systems (SAS) program in India.

Arnab focuses on generating learning opportunities to improve project outcomes and the evaluation of post-intervention processes. He is interested in using mixed methods and participatory tools, along with ICT based methods, which are relevant for information diffusion and knowledge networks in food systems.

Mahesh Kumar Gathala

Born into a farming family in Rajasthan, Mahesh Gathala obtained his BSc and MSc from Rajasthan Agricultural University and his PhD in Soil Science from Maharana Pratap University of Agriculture and Technology (MPUA&T), Udaipur.

Currently, he has been working since 2011 with CIMMYT’s Sustainable Intensification Program, as a Senior Systems Agronomist, presently based in Bangladesh. Dr Gathala has made strong contributions to strategic research, development and deployment of Conservation Agriculture (CA) based Sustainable Intensification, crop production and farming systems, small scale mechanization, innovations for youth and women micro-entrepreneurship and capacity building to several thousand farmers and partners. He is currently responsible for developing sustainable intensification through CA-based management solutions to address issues of resource degradation, soil health, abiotic stresses, and climate change in South Asia.

Michael Kariuki Ndegwa

Michael Ndegwa is a Market and Value Chain Specialist at CIMMYT with experience in evaluating agricultural policies and technologies using cutting edge evaluation methodologies. As a scientist in the SAS program, he is currently working on strategies for enhancing the performance of seed systems in East Africa, with a particular focus on seed marketing innovations for achieving faster varietal turnover. He has also conducted research on innovative models for financing and derisking agricultural production for smallholders in Africa, evaluation of postharvest technologies such as hermetic bags and metal silos, evaluation of drought maize varieties, among other research agenda.

Md. Shariful Islam

Md. Shariful Islam is a Machinery Development officer in the Sustainable Agrifood Systems (SAS) program in Bangladesh.

He has a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the IUBAT-International University of Business Agriculture and Technology and more than ten years of experience as a mechanical engineer across different industries in Bangladesh. Islam has worked as a senior assistance manager at PEB Steel Alliance Ltd. (PEBSAL) as a mechanical engineer at Quazi Enterprises Limited (QEL) and at Dhaka Tobacco Industries.
